Hope Plus - a glimpse of the future of the ethical Web?

Published: 4th November 2009

Author: Andrew Hart

Once in a while a breakthrough occurs that changes the Web. Very occasionally ideas go beyond that and alter how we live our lives. Project Hope Plus takes a flying leap beyond that and aims to change the world!

Sound like a grand idea? Well, it is, and it is not a million miles from being a reality.

The goal is to provide "a global, multilingual web portal allowing people to collaborate on social projects such as building schools, campaigning against pollution or helping disaster victims" according to the E-Government Bulletin from Headstar and the work is being by led PoliticsOnline.

Such a far reaching Web 2.0 project is bound to have far reaching effects - bringing change on a global scale to those desperately need it whilst reducing much of the bureaucracy normally surrounding many NGOs.

Hope + Action = Change

The name Hope Plus refers to hope plus action leading to change. The project aims to be a facilitator for people to take action upon their hopes, allowing them to bring about real changes - the project itself will deliver nothing if there is no will from individuals. President Barack Obama and Microsoft founder Bill Gates have been asked to back this project and given their backgrounds I am sure that both men will be keen to lend their support.

The idea is to create a world online Peace Corps, or a global 'eBay for caring'.

Phil Noble, founder of PoliticsOnline

This is a truly ground-breaking project and I personally wish it every success. I will be seeing how I can get involved and it would be nice to think that I might influence one or two people reading this to do likewise.

I hope that this encourages others to use the Web for more socially inclusive, humanitarian focused projects. The bar has been set high, but not every project has to be global and reaching beyond political boundaries ;)
